There’s so much more to regular eye exams than reading a chart. They help us pick out some snazzy new frames! By getting our eyes tested regularly, we not only maintain our sight but often identify problems before they become serious.
Conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts can develop silently over time without any noticeable symptoms. With a comprehensive eye exam we can find issues before they become serious. From there, we can work together to come up with a personalized plan to protect your vision and 13maintain its health. Like glaucoma, which can lead to vision loss with little or no warning, a comprehensive eye exam is often the only way to detect it in time.
Identifying these diseases as early as possible allows us to protect our vision for decades. Eye exams in our area are about much more than just a 30 second glance. A full exam can take close to two hours, depending on the services you require. We perform a series of exam tests to determine your overall vision.
These tests are designed to measure your vision at various distances, how your eyes coordinate with each other, and the overall health of the back of your eye. This allows us to identify color vision deficiency, which as many as 12% of men can be affected. Most people are unaware of their color vision deficiencies until an eye exam discovers it. This can have profound impacts on everyday tasks such as selecting an outfit or being able to get behind the wheel and drive safely.
We’ll want to know what medications you take and if your parents or siblings have ever had vision problems. This allows us to identify patterns and risks proactively.
We especially want to know about your lived experiences and everyday life. Screen time for work or hobbies that require excellent vision are important things to let us know. Whether you experience dry eyes, blurry spots, or headaches, the more specific information you provide, the better your exam will serve you.
This is not a rote checklist for us – it’s an actual discussion, and it helps determine what’s best to care for your eyes.
The eye chart test involves reading letters on an eye chart from various distances. We’ll conduct a refraction test that will tell us precisely what prescription you require for glasses or contact lenses.
We will test how you see different colors and your depth perception, which is important for driving or playing sports. With the help of our digital tools, we can catch small deviations in your vision that can easily go undetected by traditional equipment.
You’ll be under the care of both an upper-year optometry student and a licensed optometrist, double-checking every detail.
For your eye health, we look at both the outside and inside of your eyes using special equipment. We screen for common issues like diabetic retinopathy, retinal disease, and measure eye pressure, which helps us catch glaucoma early.
Your pupils will be dilated – just a heads up, you might be extra sensitive to light for a few hours afterward. Keeping tabs on these details lets us spot problems before they get serious.
We use other advanced tools, such as OCT imaging, to view in detail the layers within your retina. This allows us to have a three-dimensional map, allowing us to detect changes or damage sooner.
With this technology, we can design a care plan tailored specifically to your one-of-a-kind eyes. We do not subscribe to the “one size fits all” philosophy! All of these tools make the experience more efficient too, allowing for a smooth and timely visit.
After receiving all of our results, we’ll discuss eyewear options that suit your unique style and preferences. We’ll recommend other services, such as vision therapy or dry eye treatment, if they’re indicated.
Children need to be examined annually – approximately 80% of all learning is visual. We’ll schedule follow-up visits as needed to keep your eyes healthy and modify your treatment as your life circumstances evolve.
